If you know me personally, you’ve probably seen my giant half-sleeve tattoo of a space scene– astronaut, stars and a galaxy, moon, planets, sound wave. If you’ve ever inquired about it, I probably avoided eye contact and sheepishly told you: “Yeah. I, um.. I just think space is really cool….”
For some reason, I tend to have a hard time putting words to things that mean a lot to me. I sat down recently and decided I would try. This is what I came up with:
I’ve always loved space. I used to want to be an astronaut. Space has always seemed like an escape, where one could be free from the troubles of this world. Today, I saw a full moon surrounded by tons of clouds, and I suddenly completely understood why space exploration is such a big deal, even though it drains billions of dollars per year which could be better spent doing other things and helping people or societies around the world.
We, as humans, are always trying to get closer to God. Not that I believe God lives in space, but I think exploring the vastness of the universe helps us understand how enormous everything is— we are in one galaxy of many—some known and some not even discovered yet. It shows that God’s imagination is infinite. And he created it all on purpose, knowing that we would come looking for it. Not in a cruel way, but I think he knew that us being able to explore his imagination would help us feel closer to him.
